Back to THINK Day of Discovery Page
Waiakea Intermediate School presents a THINK Day of Discovery for elementary and middle school students (grades 3-8)! Participate in two hands-on workshops that inspire students to explore a potential career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Workshops include 3-2-1 Rocket Launch, Eco-Warrior (Compositing), Roller Coaster Engineering, Robot Soccer & More.
3-2-1 ROCKET LAUNCH!Students will design, build, and launch a bottle rocket of their very own. Students will learn about a career in astrophysics and the principles of aerodynamics, thrust, and transfer of energy. |
ECO-WARRIORSStudents will make and take home their very own compost worm habitats. Students will learn about a career in ecology and the importance of the earth’s ecosystem as they explore green ways to help preserve our natural environment. |
ROLLER COASTER ENGINEERSStudents will learn about a career in mechanical engineering as they explore the engineering and design process. Students will create, design, and test their very own paper roller coasters. |
ROBO-SOCCERStudents will learn about a career in robotic engineering as they explore the engineering and design process. Students will design and build robots to compete in a robotics soccer tournament. |
FORENSIC SCIENCEStudents will explore how physical and chemical properties of matter can help solve crimes. Students will learn about a career in forensic science as they use special tools, analyze evidence, and uncover the hidden mysteries embedded in a crime scene. |
EVERYDAY SCIENCEUsing Everyday Hardware Items to Conduct Simple Science Experiments Ace Hardware Hawaii (HouseMart. Inc.) Science play a role in everything that happens around us every day. “Think like scientists”not only inside, but outside the classroom as well? Find all your science project needs in a hardware store. |
MATH MAGICParticipants will learn about circumference, radius, diameter, and other mathematical terms and equations related to circles. Students will use a special compass, protractor and ruler to compare the sizes of different planets and objects in space. |
STEM-IN-MOTIONStudents will create pasta cars that will test the limits of Newton’s three laws of motion. Will they survive a crash test at the end of the workshop? There’s only one way to find out in this workshop geared towards principles of physical science and the engineering and design process. |
SUBARU TELESCOPEStudents will learn about the properties of light as they make their very own spectrometers. Students will also learn about a career in astronomy and get the opportunity to ask a real life Astronomer from Subaru Telescope about their profession. |
