What is a Four Bar Lift?
A four bar lift is a type of linkage that is built using a parallelogram shape.
Advantages:
Simple to build with few parts.
Shallow outward swing as the robot lifts.
Can be used to hold things parallel to the ground or create a rocking type motion depending on the distance between the parralel linkages of the arm.
Challenges:
Maximum lift height is limited as the bars will eventually collide with each other.
Four Bar Lift Examples in Real Life
Your knee's motion isn't a simple hinge; it's guided by a crossed four-bar linkage made of your bones and ligaments.
An adujustable desklamp uses four linkages to position the light.
The wheels of an old steam engine train are connected with linkages that makes the wheels turn together.
The four bar linkage shape in locking pliers causes it to be able to open in some directions, but stops it from moving in others directions.
